  • Road Icon: The Balboa Motorhome — Surf & Turf

In 1969, the renowned boat manufacturer Jensen Marine, of Costa Mesa, California, decided to get into the booming RV scene. Their designers imagined a rig tough enough for seafaring, but made for the road. The Balboa Motorhome debuted as the first B+ van of its kind, promising not to “squeak, leak, rattle, or rust.” The manufacturer installed a solid piece of fiberglass, as on a sailboat, atop Chevy, Ford and Dodge chassis, creating a stylish family van that fit into a parking spot just like a station wagon.

The boxy open floor plan highlighted ample storage, a wet bath, a kitchenette, a classic rear entry and expansive windows that brought the outdoors inside. About 14 dealers—mainly on the West Coast—sold the Balboa. Though a relative success, the camper ultimately fell victim to the energy crisis of the early ’70s. Only about 1,000 vans ever reached the market.

Nowadays, these rigs are uncommon in the wild. Unless you’re in the tight-knit coastal town of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. On any given beach day, several head-turning Balboas join the lineup of Sprinters, Westfalias and creeper-vans-turned-surf-mobiles at the intimate Cardiff State Beach lot. Back doors open to reveal a sea-green playground where long and short boarders wax poetic from sunrise to sunset. Salty kids draped in towels crunch on Doritos while seagulls lurk around the edges in envy.

The Balboa phenomenon here in Cardiff is powered by Paul Tralka, who started the one-man, backyard van restoration shop known as Freedom Vessel. Paul bought his first Balboa from a 90-year-old former pilot over a landline. “It worked all the time, had power, space, and big windows so I didn’t feel trapped or guilty if I was inside of it while camping,” says Tralka.

From there, curious, gull-like bystanders and friends inquired about where to get one, so he started restoring and selling Balboas one by one, saving these relics from junkyards and “Grandpa’s backyard” around the country. The demand for Balboas runs year-round in this sweet spot home base, where the van complements the town’s nostalgic hippie culture and amplifies the outdoor lifestyle.

Paul has since renovated over 40 Balboas, including the first one ever made, named the Surveyor after a lunar vehicle of that era. Each van has a story and distinct personality, costing a quarter of the price of a new van, but with a 50-year-old caveat: it may or may not make it to Alaska.

“Our Balboa’s name is Loretta,” says local owner Agatha Borrelli, “and she is absolutely a Loretta.” More than a recreational vehicle, their van serves as a spotlight in brand photo shoots for Borrelli’s production company and a post-surf therapy lounge for her husband’s clients.

From the wisdom of the sea came a short-lived but longstanding van, a pioneer for others in its class. Now transforming a beach town, the Balboa community and Freedom Vessel are making good on Jensen Marine’s original adage: Getting there is all the fun.

  • Video: Go Inside the All-New 2026 East to West College Avenue Class C Coach

In our Friday RV news round-up last week, we mentioned that Forest River had announced the all-new East to West College Avenue motorhome. Now, just a few days later, we get to take a closer look at this exciting Class C model courtesy of the video above. As you’ll see, the rig packs a lot of features and amenities into a reasonably sized package, making it an approachable option that is easy and fun to drive, without skimping on comfort and styling.

    East to West College Avenue

Photo Credit: Forest River/East to West RV

Currently available in six unique floor plans, the East to West College Avenue—named after the street in Goshen, IN, where Forest River was first founded—has something to offer just about everyone. Sizes range from as small as 23′ 10″ all the way up to 32′ 6″, with room to sleep four to six people depending on the layout. For simplicity’s sake, most models slide-free, although two floor plans (the 2201S and 2951OK) do come with slides for those looking for a bit of extra space. All versions ride on the Ford E-450 chassis, which includes a 7.3L V8 engine with a six-speed transmission, giving it 325 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

The floor plan shown in the video above is the College Avenue 2201S. This three-season coach does have one slide-out in the bedroom, which makes more space for the queen-size bed. A second sleep space is found in the cabover area, and the dinette also converts to a bed for more guests. A surprisingly roomy bathroom is located behind a sliding door, with a separate sink found outside the lavatory itself for easy access. The kitchen includes a round stainless steel sink with a high-rise faucet, a three-burner cooktop, a convection microwave oven, and a 12V refrigerator. Solid surface countertops, Azdel composite wall construction, a tankless water heater, heated holding tanks, and a quiet 4500W generator (larger models get a 6000W model) all come standard.

  • Video: Is the 2026 Jayco Granite Ridge the Perfect Class C Coach?

Camper vans have been all the rage over the past few years, but many Class B owners are now looking to upgrade to something a little larger, yet just as easy to drive. That’s where the new 2026 Jayco Granite Ridge Class C coach enters the picture. This model is larger than a van, but not ponderously so. The 22T floor plan, featured in the video above, also happens to ride on a Ford Transit 350HD AWD chassis, giving it some serious off-road capabilities. And as you’ll see in the YouTube clip, the interior is comfortable, well-appointed, and roomy.

    Jayco Granite Ridge

The Jayco Granite Ridge was one of the more exciting motor coaches we saw at the recent Hershey RV Show. Outside, the rig is impressively burly, sporting all-terrain tires, a roof rack, and a collapsible ladder. Starlink internet also comes standard, as does a heated gear garage with Molle panels, and removable wireless speakers courtesy of JBL. It even ships with a Firefly multiplexing system, allowing owners to control lights, climate, power, and more from a touch screen or an app on their smartphone. In other words, this Class C model has both brains and brawn.

Inside, the 22T floor plan features two twin beds that convert into a king, a sizable wet bath, and a versatile dinette that pulls double duty as a lounge when the table is removed. The kitchen comes equipped with a mini-fridge, a single-bowl stainless steel sink, an induction microwave, and a portable induction cooktop that can be stashed away to conserve space. Heating and cooling come courtesy of a 17,000 BTU hydronic heating system and a 13,500 BTU air conditioner. A gas generator and 360W solar panels provide power while living off-grid.

Currently, the Granite Ridge is available in two distinct floor plans. In addition to the 22T model detailed in the video, Jayco also offers the 23S, which swaps the Ford chassis in favor of a Mercedes 3500 AWD version. That model also replaces the L-shaped dinette with bench seating and two removable tables, and has larger wardrobes and a bigger outdoor awning.

The Jayco Granite Ridge promises to be one of the more exciting Class C models to hit the road in 2026. Check out the video to get a sense of everything it brings to the table. And to learn more—including full specs and features—visit the Jayco website.

  • The Best Super C RVs of 2025

Class C coaches have always occupied a Goldilocks position in the RV space. Larger and more comfortable than a camper van, but not as big and ponderous as a Class A model, these motorhomes frequently strike a “just right” chord with buyers. And for those who prefer yet a little more space, Super C RVs are an option, delivering more of everything we love from this category of camper.

So what qualities define Super C RVs, and which models are the best on the market these days? Read on to find out.

    Super C RVs

What is a Super C RV?

In many ways, Super C RVs look a lot like their smaller Class C siblings. That includes the distinctive cabover design, which typically houses a sleeping space or additional storage. But whereas regular Class C models tend to be built on a van or pick-up truck platform, Super Cs ride on larger commercial truck chassis, such as the Ford F-550 or F-600 models.

Riding on a larger chassis gives Super C RVs some distinct advantages. For instance, a wider wheelbase gives them a smoother, more stable ride. These rigs also generally come with diesel engines that produce more power and provide a higher towing capacity for bringing a dinghy along for the journey, while also requiring less maintenance  The larger platform also translates to more interior floor space, adding comfort, luxury, and residential-style amenities throughout.

Of course, there are a few downsides as well. Because these RVs are larger than regular Class C models, they aren’t quite as maneuverable or as easy to park. In fact, sometimes they rival Class A models in that department, making them somewhat intimidating to drive, especially for newcomers. Unsurprisingly, Super C RVs are also more expensive, often costing as much or more than a Class A coach.

With that information in mind, these are our picks for the best Super C RVs currently available.

  • The Best Couples Campers of 2025

Couples campers aren’t necessarily a distinct sub-category in the RV space, but there are definitely motorhomes, camper vans, and towables that are well suited for two people. If you happen to be in the market for just such a model, we have some suggestions you’ll want to check out. These are our picks for the best couples campers currently available.

    What is a Couples Camper?

While just about any RV is a good option for two people, some are specifically built with couples in mind. These rigs can be a Class A, B, or C model, or come in a towable form factor, although the floor plans tend to be smaller in size. Most couples campers only have one bedroom, and in some cases may not have an additional sleeping space at all, although most do come with a couch that converts to a second bed. Additionally, the living room area may only have seating for two, and the kitchen and bathroom are designed to support a couple, with perhaps the occasional guest coming along for the ride.

With that definition in mind, these are our picks for the best couples campers of 2025.

    Winnebago M-Series

Couples will find a lot to love in the Winnebago M-Series 1923RB. This floor plan includes a large and comfortable bed and comes with built-in wardrobes and nightstands for bedside storage. Flexibility and versatility are the name of the game with the outstanding travel trailer. While this model is a perfect option for couples, it does have room for up to eight people should a few guests want to tag along. That’s due in part to the inclusion of the Ember’s patent-pending Embertrack System, which gives owners a customizable space to add bunks, create an office, make a walk-in closet, or whatever else their creative minds can come up with. It’s a very unique feature that isn’t found in offerings from other manufacturers.

  • Road Icon: Join the Airstream Argosy Club

In March 1972, when the first Airstream Argosy rolled out of the company’s newly opened manufacturing plant in Versailles, Ohio, it marked a pivot for the venerable brand—one not entirely welcomed by Airstream enthusiasts. Until that point, the iconic company had almost exclusively produced high-end, shiny aluminum trailers that turned heads on the highway. That shine—that distinction, that head-turning quality—was something of a status symbol.

But while the Argosy was designed much like the standard Airstream, it didn’t have the shine. It was painted white. The sidewalls were still aluminum, but they were occasionally made from damaged panels, and the trailer’s end-caps were made from plastic and steel. By painting the trailer, the company concealed blemishes and cheaper material.

“It was a recycling method,” explains Dan Maul, the visitor experience coordinator at the Airstream Heritage Center in Jackson Center, Ohio. “We wanted to take the aerodynamic design and other cues from the Airstream and create a less-expensive travel trailer.”

The Argosy was also a way for Airstream to experiment and reach new customers amidst the 1970s economic malaise. Depending on the model, Argosy trailers could be had for a few thousand dollars less than their pure-bred counterparts; they featured concepts like wraparound windows, narrower widths on some trailers, a rear bedroom and composite aluminum flooring.

In certain eyes, it was a great success. Maul estimates a few thousand Argosy trailers sold during an initial eight-year run, and the ability to test new features helped Airstream launch into the motorhome space, too. But some Airstream owners refused to accept Argosy owners as their brethren. For decades, the Airstream Club International (which is independently run by enthusiasts) refused to let Argosy owners join up or attend events.

    Airstream Argosy

Due to the same economic conditions that spawned the Argosy in the first place, the Versailles plant was closed in the late ’70s. Airstream was acquired by THOR Industries and the Argosy line went out of production (though the name reemerged briefly as a fifth wheel concept). In 1991, club members finally relented, and Argosy trailers—steadily becoming classics—were welcomed at rallies.

“There are still a few members out there who remember the days when the Argosy was not permitted,” lifetime club member Kevin Allen wrote in an Airstream forum. “Fortunately, this group is a small minority.”

Today, Maul says, the Airstream Argosy is growing in popularity—not only because it’s a vintage unit, but because white panels allow owners to customize the exterior. “A lot of the hype came after the fact,” he says. “These days we celebrate all the models. It is part of our family now.”
